A study at San Diego School of Medicine, University of California suggests that having a handful of walnuts which are a rich source of polyunsaturated fats everyday can lead to weight loss, improve heart health and lower cholesterol.
For the study 254 obese and overweight women between 22 to 72 years of age were divided into three groups- the first group was given a low fat-high carbohydrate diet, the second group was given a high fat -low carbohydrate diet and the third group was given a walnut-rich, high fat-low carbohydrate diet. After six months , women of all three groups lost about 8 percent of their weight. But the ones taking walnut-rich diet showed significant improvement in their heart health and cholesterol levels also.
Even peanuts are found to keep you from dying of respiratory diseases, neuro-degenerative diseases and cardiovascular diseases recommend researchers at Maastricht University.
Walnuts have high amount of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is a plant derivative of omega-3 fatty acid which our body cannot produce and hence is deficient of.
The results of the study can not be generalised because the study was conducted on only women wanting to lose weight but a study from Harvard suggests that consumption of polyunsaturated fats over saturated fats may help us live longer and have a lower risk of heart disease.
