What separates parents who raise happier people from those who don’t?
A new study tracking 5,362 people from their birth in 1946 found that parents who are warm and less controlling have happier children while children raised by over protective parents have worse mental well-being.
The study , over 60 years later, had 2000 people answering a series of surveys regarding their parents. The negative effect of controlling parents can be seen in children even in their 60s and researchers compared the damaging effects to death of a loved one.
Lack of warmth also makes it hard for children to bond with their parents as reported in the research.
